ChatGPT on Mac gets new update to read and send iMessages

OpenAI has released a new plugin for the ChatGPT app on macOS, allowing Mac users to directly integrate the AI system with the Apple Messages app. This enables users to search chat history, analyze content, draft reply messages, and send messages to others instantly.
Key capabilities of this plugin include support for iMessage, SMS, and RCS on Apple Silicon Macs. Users can install it from the ChatGPT Plugins interface under the Public category, which features recommended prompt sets such as having the AI check calendars to reply with available meeting times, summarizing follow-up messages from yesterday, finding birthdays in chats to save to the calendar, or even filtering out spam messages for deletion.
Regarding usage and security, since the plugin requires access to local data, users must configure additional permissions in macOS System Settings, including Full Disk Access, Contacts access, and Automation. Furthermore, the messaging system is designed to require user approval by default every time, and OpenAI has warned users to exercise caution if they choose to set up persistent approval for sending messages.
It enables Mac users to let AI conveniently and quickly manage daily chat messages, though careful attention must be paid to privacy and granting local data permissions.
