1Password partners with Claude to automate web logins, setting a new security standard for the AI Agent era
Popular password manager 1Password partners with Anthropic, allowing Claude to perform browser tasks on a user's behalf without exposing credentials to the AI model.
Password manager 1Password has launched "1Password for Claude," a browser-based integration that enables Anthropic’s Claude to access stored login data to perform complex tasks like booking travel or managing online accounts.
A key highlight is its security-first architecture. When Claude needs to perform a login, 1Password triggers a user permission prompt, detailing exactly what data is being requested and why. Once verified via biometrics, 1Password "injects" the credentials directly into the webpage. The entire process happens locally, ensuring sensitive password data is never shared with, trained on, or stored by Anthropic.
Initially, 1Password for Claude supports only standard logins and Time-based One-Time Passwords (TOTP), excluding sensitive data like credit cards. It is currently available for 1Password users on Mac across all plan tiers, requiring both the desktop app and relevant browser extensions.
This partnership advances 1Password’s "Agentic Mode" vision. When an AI Agent takes control of a browser, 1Password auto-locks and restricts access strictly to the data required for the specific task, preventing the AI from accessing the entire vault. Nancy Wang, CTO of 1Password, noted, "We need a new security model designed for agents, not just humans... The answer isn't handing over your secrets to the agent."
This represents a significant milestone in enabling AI agents to handle complex human tasks securely, establishing a blueprint for privacy-first integration as AI becomes more autonomous in daily life.
