Gemini Now Lets You Turn Off the Bottom-Right Watermark on AI Images and Videos — but the Hidden Watermark Stays
Google has added an option for Gemini and Flow users to disable the visible watermark (a sparkle icon) on AI-generated images, videos, and music — though an invisible digital watermark remains embedded in the files as before.
Google has announced a new update allowing users of Gemini and Flow (Google's AI video creation tool) to turn off the visible watermark on AI-generated media, including images, videos, and music. The watermark in question is the "sparkle" icon that previously appeared automatically in the bottom-right corner of files.
Using the feature is straightforward: users simply go to the Settings menu and toggle off "Media watermark." Once disabled, Google will no longer add the sparkle watermark to newly created media. The addition of this toggle was announced by Josh Woodward, Vice President at Google.
However, turning off the visible watermark doesn't mean files become "untraceable." Google confirms that SynthID (a digital watermark embedded invisibly within the file) and C2PA metadata (provenance data identifying the content's origin) will continue to be embedded in every file as usual, ensuring content can still be verified as AI-generated after the fact.
Another important limitation: this feature won't be available in countries with laws mandating clear AI watermarks — namely the European Union, South Korea, Vietnam, and in some cases India. Users in those regions will continue to see the sparkle watermark on their generated media.
For content creators who regularly use Gemini or Flow, this update delivers clean-looking images and videos that are ready to use right away, without wasting time cropping out watermarks. As for users in Thailand, there's no confirmation yet on whether the country falls under the restricted group, but in principle Thailand is not on the list Google specified.
Thai users who create images or videos with Gemini will no longer have a watermark blocking the corner of their work, making it more convenient to use right away. However, they should be aware that files still carry an embedded SynthID that can always be detected — so the content shouldn't be used in ways that mislead people into thinking it's authentic.
