Review: Ohsnap MCON, a Slide-Out Controller That Turns Your iPhone Into a Handheld Game Console
A MagSafe magnetic game controller that slides open when you're ready to play and folds flat against the phone when you're done, put through two weeks of real-world testing by 9to5Mac
9to5Mac has published a hands-on review of the Ohsnap MCON, a new kind of mobile game controller. The writer first saw a prototype at CES last year and was immediately impressed by the concept: a full-size controller that attaches to the back of your phone via MagSafe. When you want to play, you press the Launch button to release the mechanism and the controller slides out; when you're done, it folds back flush against the phone, making it easy to carry anywhere without the bulk.
Over two weeks of testing, the reviewer pushed the device hard in several ways: actuating the slide mechanism hundreds of times, playing games via emulators and Apple Arcade, and swapping it between multiple phones to see how durable it is and how well it performs in everyday use.
Developed by Ohsnap in collaboration with designer Josh King, the controller comes with a full standard button layout: A, B, X, Y buttons, a D-pad, Hall-effect joysticks (which use magnets to detect movement, reducing stick-drift issues), L/R triggers, and fold-out grips for a comfortable hold.
Interestingly, while it's designed specifically for the iPhone's MagSafe, Android users and owners of other phones can use it too, thanks to a magnetic adapter plate included in the box—so it's not limited to the Apple camp.
According to multiple outlets, Gizmodo believes the MCON effectively solves the bulkiness problem of typical mobile controllers, BGR confirmed the project was funded through Kickstarter, and Pocket-lint, after hands-on testing, praised the solid slide mechanism and its satisfying, clearly audible "click."
For those familiar with expandable controllers like the Backbone One, it's worth noting the difference: the Backbone uses a telescopic design that clamps onto the sides of the phone, while the MCON slides out from the back—a clearly distinct design approach.
Most mobile controllers are large and cumbersome to carry, but the MCON offers a new approach that folds flat against the back of the phone. It's a great fit for Thai gamers who frequently play mobile games or emulators and want a highly portable controller—though pricing and official retail availability in Thailand remain to be seen.
