OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has launched its first commercial hardware product, the "Codex Micro," a compact keypad specifically designed to control AI agents. The device is a collaboration with Work Louder, a manufacturer of high-end mechanical keyboards for developers.
The Codex Micro is priced at $230 as a limited-edition release. Based on Work Louder's Creator Micro 2, the device features a CNC-machined aluminum and polycarbonate chassis, 13 mechanical keys, a rotary encoder, a joystick, and a trackball sensor. It supports Bluetooth or USB-C connectivity and is compatible with both Windows and macOS.
The standout feature of the Codex Micro is its six dedicated "Agent Keys," which utilize RGB backlighting to display the real-time status of an AI agent: white for idle, blue for thinking, green for task completion, amber for awaiting approval, and red for errors. These visual cues require the ChatGPT desktop application to function.
While this marks OpenAI's first official hardware release, it is a niche collaborative project distinct from the large-scale hardware initiatives previously rumored.
This launch marks a significant first step for OpenAI into hardware, signaling that the future of AI interaction may move beyond standard keyboards toward specialized, tangible devices.
