Waze Integrates Gemini AI for Major Update: Adds Personalized Navigation, Natural Language Search, and New Modes
Waze navigation app announces a major update, integrating Google's Gemini AI to enhance core capabilities, from personalized route recommendations to more natural voice-command location searches.
Waze, the popular navigation app managed by Google, has rolled out a suite of new features powered by Gemini AI. This is part of Google's broader strategy to integrate AI technology into its various products, while also strengthening its competitiveness against key rival, Apple Maps.
The most notable new feature is "Personalized Navigation," which uses AI to learn users' past driving habits and preferred routes. For instance, if a user frequently chooses highways over secondary roads, the system will prioritize such routes to best match their preferences. Additionally, Gemini enhances Destination Search, making it feel more like a natural conversation. Users can ask questions like "Find a coffee shop that's open now" or "Where's the nearest and cheapest gas station?", and the system will understand and display relevant results.
Waze has also expanded its "Conversational Reporting" feature, which began testing in October 2024, allowing users to report traffic information or map changes directly by speaking simple phrases like "This road is closed." This information will be sent to local map editors for further verification. For users who prefer fewer frequent alerts, a new "Less Chatty Mode" reduces the frequency of voice notifications, but still retains essential alerts such as turns and upcoming hazards.
Additionally, "Motorcycle Mode" has been introduced, which uses AI to calculate routes specifically suited for two-wheelers, along with alerts for road hazards like potholes, speed bumps, or narrow bridges. However, this mode is currently only available in select countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines; Thailand is not yet on this list. The other features mentioned above are gradually rolling out globally on both Android and iOS.
This update clearly reflects the trend of AI being used to make everyday applications smarter and more responsive to individual users. It also directly escalates competition with Apple Maps, which will ultimately benefit consumers in the long run.
