Anthropic Rolls Out Claude Rupee Pricing in India, Its Second-Largest Market, Lacks UPI Support

Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI model, has begun gradually adjusting its subscription prices to Indian Rupee for users in the country. India is considered the company's largest market outside the United States, accounting for 5.8% of its global users.

Some Claude users in India have already started seeing the new prices on the website and mobile applications, with details as follows: - **Claude Pro:** 2,000 Rupee per month (when paid annually), or approximately $21 USD, which is higher than the US price of $17. - **Claude Max:** Starting at 11,999 Rupee, or approximately $125 USD, compared to the US price of $100. - **Claude Team:** Starting at 2,399 Rupee per seat, or approximately $25 USD, compared to the US price of $20. These Rupee prices include local taxes.

However, payments are still limited to credit/debit cards or through Apple and Google billing systems, unlike competitor OpenAI, which launched ChatGPT pricing in Rupee with support for UPI (Unified Payments Interface), a highly popular payment system in India, since last August.

This price adjustment is part of Anthropic's aggressive strategy to penetrate the Indian market, following the opening of its Bengaluru office last February and the appointment of Irina Ghose, former managing director of Microsoft India, to lead its business in the country since January. Additionally, the company has partnered with Indian tech giants Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services.

Why it matters
This move reflects the strategy of leading AI companies to adapt to large local markets and could signal future pricing strategies in other regions, including Southeast Asia.
