Claude Code Gets New Update: Sessions Can Now Message Each Other Across Windows, No More Manual Copy-Pasting

Anthropic adds Cross-session messaging to Claude Code, letting concurrently running sessions coordinate directly, in version 2.1.224 on macOS and Linux

Anthropic has announced a new capability for Claude Code, its Terminal-based AI coding assistant, and this time it's a feature that genuinely solves a real user pain point: Claude Code sessions can now talk to each other directly via Cross-session messaging.

Here's how it works: Claude Code can send messages and data to other sessions running in parallel, meaning users no longer have to manually copy results or details between Terminal windows. This is especially useful for long, multi-step tasks—users no longer need to sit and wait step by step, since each session can hand off data, notify others when a task completes, or coordinate among themselves automatically.

Behind the scenes, the feature relies on two new tools: ListAgents (a tool for finding active sessions running on the same machine) and SendMessage (a tool for sending messages between sessions). Only summary text is shared between sessions—full conversation histories, files, and session permissions are not included.

To use the feature, users must update Claude Code to version 2.1.224 or later, and it is currently supported only on macOS and Linux. Windows is not supported in this release.
