Challenging Meta! Even Realities Launches G2 Smart Glasses Without Camera or Speakers, Prioritizing Productivity

While tech giant Meta pushes smart glasses with cameras for video recording, Even Realities, an up-and-coming startup from Shenzhen, takes a different path by launching its second-generation smart glasses, the "G2," deliberately omitting both cameras and speakers.

The core concept of G2 is to be a true productivity accessory, targeting users who frequently attend meetings, give presentations, or travel. The glasses display essential information via a monochromatic green screen resembling a neon sign, without any photo or video recording functions. This design prevents people nearby from feeling secretly filmed, addressing the privacy concerns often criticized in camera-equipped smart glasses.

Regarding specifications, the G2 boasts several upgrades from its first generation. The display brightness has increased to 1,200 nits (a unit of brightness) from 1,000 nits, offering a 75% larger display area and a 60Hz refresh rate (up from 20Hz). It now features four microphones (from two) for clearer audio capture. The glasses are crafted from premium materials, with a magnesium alloy frame and titanium alloy temples. For battery life, the company claims up to two days of general use per charge, and the accompanying charging case can recharge the glasses seven more times.

Although early reviewers encountered frequent disconnections with the mobile application, this issue has since been resolved, leading to improved stability. The success of this approach is reflected in Even Realities, a company only three years old, recently securing $150 million in a pre-Series B funding round led by Meituan and Tencent, pushing its valuation past $1 billion and cementing its status as a unicorn startup.

Why it matters
Amidst the trend of smart glasses focusing on photography and social media, the G2 demonstrates a new direction emphasizing specialized use for professionals. This approach could solve privacy concerns and foster greater public acceptance of this technology.
