Gemini monthly active users cross 1 billion, but still trails rival ChatGPT
Google officially announces a major milestone for its Gemini AI, with Monthly Active Users (MAU) surpassing the 1 billion mark.
Google revealed Gemini usage statistics, stating that the Gemini app and website have officially surpassed 1 billion Monthly Active Users (MAU). This makes Gemini the fastest-growing Google product in history and the company's 14th product to exceed 1 billion users.
This milestone counts only direct users accessing the Gemini app and website, excluding the 2.5 billion monthly users of AI Overviews in Google Search. Google also shared additional user behavior insights, such as 63% of users interacting via voice, over 150 million images generated daily, and more than 100 million users on iOS.
However, compared to its main rival OpenAI's ChatGPT—which previously reached the 1 billion monthly active users milestone and reportedly boasts 1 billion Weekly Active Users—Gemini still lags behind ChatGPT in terms of total user base.
Reflects the fierce global AI market competition among major players, with Google's Gemini experiencing rapid growth alongside a global surge in user adoption.
