Meta swiftly retreats! Announces closure of AI image creation feature from Instagram accounts after heavy criticism.
Meta announces the cancellation of a new Meta AI feature that allowed users to create images from public Instagram accounts by simply tagging names, following heavy criticism over its opt-out policy rather than a voluntary opt-in.
Just days after its launch, Meta announced last Friday that it would discontinue a new AI image creation feature that allowed users to generate modified images from public Instagram account content by simply tagging (@) those accounts. The feature was part of an AI image generation model called "Muse Image," which launched last Tuesday. The issue that generated strong criticism was the feature's usage policy, which was set to automatically opt-out users over 18 with public accounts. This meant content from their accounts could immediately be used to create AI images without prior consent. If account owners did not wish for this, they had to manually go into settings to disable the feature. This approach was seen as placing the burden on users and infringing upon privacy rights. Pressure came from various sectors, including the SAG-AFTRA actors' union and the renowned agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which represents numerous global artists. They issued statements demanding Meta change its policy to a voluntary opt-in for users. Additionally, privacy rights organization Foxglove told the BBC that such a feature was a "recipe for disaster" due to its high risk of being used to create non-consensual and harmful images. A Meta spokesperson issued a statement acknowledging, "We've received feedback that this feature missed the mark. Our intention was to build a creative and useful tool while giving people control over whether their public content is referenced. For this reason, we've decided not to enable this feature going forward." This swift decision reflects Meta's responsiveness to public criticism on this sensitive issue.
This incident reflects increasing pressure on large tech companies to design AI products with user rights and consent as a top priority. This is an issue directly relevant to all Thai Instagram users with public accounts.
