Mark Zuckerberg Admits: Meta's AI Agents Developing Slower Than Expected
Meta's CEO revealed in an internal meeting that the development of intelligent AI systems has not progressed as targeted, following a major restructuring and significant layoffs.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, admitted in an internal meeting with employees that the development of systems known as AI agents (artificial intelligence systems capable of performing various tasks on behalf of humans) has not progressed as quickly as he had hoped, according to a Reuters report that heard an audio recording of the meeting. Zuckerberg stated, "The direction of development over the past four months has not accelerated as we expected," and the company's "bet on the new structure has not yet paid off." This admission comes after a major organizational restructuring, which included laying off approximately 10% of global staff and reallocating about 7,000 employees to AI-focused teams last May. Zuckerberg admitted that this change was not as "clean" as it should have been. However, despite slower-than-targeted progress, he still expects Meta to start seeing significant benefits from its AI investments within the next 3-6 months. The company plans to spend up to $145 billion USD on AI infrastructure investments.
Meta's major reshuffle directly impacts the future of Facebook and Instagram used by Thais. The speed of AI development will determine how quickly new intelligent features become available to users.
