MUFG, Japan's Banking Giant, Partners with OpenAI to Become 'AI-Native' Organization
Japan's largest bank announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise company-wide, with plans to launch an AI-powered digital bank.
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Japan's largest bank, announced a significant partnership with OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, to accelerate AI adoption across its organization. The ultimate goal is to become an 'AI-Native company' – an organization where AI is central to operations – a vision articulated by MUFG's CEO in an annual report: "We need to transform ourselves into an AI-Native company." The partnership, which began in October 2024 and was officially announced in November 2025, primarily involves the phased rollout of ChatGPT Enterprise – the highly secure enterprise version – for daily use by approximately 35,000 Mitsubishi UFJ Bank employees, starting in January 2026. This initiative aims to boost internal efficiency and streamline processes. Initial pilot results have been highly impressive. All 35,000 target employees completed 100% of the usage training. Following training led by OpenAI teams, employees created over 1,800 Custom GPTs (specialized chatbots) to assist various departments within just four months, demonstrating rapid adoption and deployment. Beyond internal use, the partnership also extends to developing direct financial innovations for customers. MUFG plans to launch a new digital bank in the next fiscal year, utilizing AI to assist in the account opening process. Both companies will also collaborate to develop a system allowing customers to consult ChatGPT directly via smartphone applications for household financial planning and asset management. This marks a broad application of Generative AI to create new financial service models.
This move by a global financial institution like MUFG reflects the full-scale integration of Generative AI into core business operations, potentially setting a new standard for the financial industry that Thai banks must closely monitor.
