The AI tools scene has a new option called BrowserOS neo, an open-source browser designed specifically for AI agents like Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex to control the browser on behalf of humans. It launched on Product Hunt billed as "the missing browser" for working with AI.

What sets it apart from cloud-based AI browsers is that BrowserOS neo runs locally on the user's machine (local-only), supporting both macOS and Windows. This means the AI can access accounts the user is actually logged into on the device, without needing to log in again through a cloud system. It can also import browsing history, bookmarks, and login data from Chrome for immediate use.

In terms of usage, the AI operates in a separate tab. Users can watch its activity in real time or review it later via the Session Replay feature. Connectivity with AI tools happens through MCP (Model Context Protocol), a standard for connecting AI to external apps and data.

Interestingly, the project was originally named "BrowserClaw" before being renamed BrowserOS neo. It is currently free to use and open-source under the AGPL-3.0 license, with official source code and documentation available on GitHub at browseros-ai/BrowserOS.

The concept behind BrowserOS neo reflects an emerging trend where browsers are no longer designed solely for people, but are starting to become a "workspace" for AI agents that take over mundane tasks like filling out forms, searching for information, or operating web apps on the user's behalf—while users remain in control and can inspect every step.

Why it matters
For developers and AI agent users in Thailand, a local-only open-source browser makes it possible to experiment with AI working on the real web without entrusting login credentials to the cloud. However, granting AI access to genuinely logged-in accounts must be done with caution. That said, most of the information comes from the developers themselves, so actual features may need to await real-world testing by users.
