Moonshot AI Launches Kimi K3, a 2.8 Trillion Parameter Open-Source Model to Rival Industry Giants

Beijing-based startup Moonshot AI has shaken the industry with the release of Kimi K3, a massive 2.8-trillion parameter open-source AI model that rivals top-tier flagship performance.

Beijing-based AI startup Moonshot AI unveiled its latest model, Kimi K3, on July 16, 2026. The release has caused a stir, with the company claiming it is currently the world’s largest open-source model, boasting a staggering 2.8 trillion parameters.

Technically, Kimi K3 is built on a new architecture called Stable LatentMoE, integrated with Kimi Delta Attention technology. Despite its 2.8 trillion total parameters, it utilizes a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture that activates only 16 of its 896 experts per token, resulting in roughly 50 billion active parameters. The model also supports a massive context window of 1 million tokens.

According to company data, benchmark results indicate that while Kimi K3 trails top commercial models like Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, it outperforms rivals such as Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.5 in coding and general agentic tasks. Following its launch, Kimi K3 reached the number three spot on the Artificial Analysis AI leaderboard and outperformed competitors in front-end web development tests on Arena.ai.

Moonshot AI confirmed it will release the full model weights to developers and researchers worldwide by July 27, 2026, reinforcing its commitment to the open-source community.
