Filmmaker YouTubers face severe backlash after accepting money to promote AI platforms
Prominent YouTube creators and filmmakers are facing intense backlash from viewers after accepting sponsorships to promote Generative AI tools without transparently disclosing their sponsored status.
In recent days, top-tier production creators and filmmakers such as Matti Haapoja and Sam “Kold” Kolder published videos demonstrating video tools from the Higgsfield platform (specifically the Seedance 2.5 feature), pitching the technology as the future of video production.
However, the videos triggered a heavy backlash from viewers and fellow creators after it was discovered that the clips were part of a paid marketing campaign but presented as organic tool reviews. Furthermore, the creative community views accepting promotional funds for AI models trained on human works without permission as a violation of ethical standpoints and credibility.
Documents outlining job offers from PR agencies and the AI company were subsequently leaked, confirming the paid partnerships involving monetary compensation and usage credits. This aligns with a Business Insider report stating that the "AI Backlash" phenomenon within the Creator Economy is becoming a major issue, as AI tech companies pour tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars into marketing budgets to lure influencers into promoting their products—sometimes paying a risk compensation fee known as the "Backlash Premium"—amid widespread criticism over inauthenticity and the impact on human labor.
This reflects a critical turning point in the Creator Economy where followers are closely monitoring and fiercely pushing back against AI sponsorships, serving as an important lesson for creators globally on maintaining audience transparency and trust.
