Debian Community Votes to Allow Responsible Use of Generative AI in Software Development
The Debian Linux developer community has passed a General Resolution allowing Generative AI to be used in creating software and documentation, provided contributors remain accountable for their work.
The Debian developer community behind the major Open Source operating system project has formally adopted the “Responsible Use of Generative AI” proposal through a General Resolution vote.
Under the resolution, Debian has made clear that it neither bans nor endorses the use of Generative AI tools to develop software and packages or produce documentation, leaving the decision to individual developers.
At the heart of the new policy is the requirement that every Contributor remain directly responsible for the quality, accuracy, security, and legal compliance of all submitted code and documentation, regardless of whether AI was used to create it.
The decision reflects how a major global open-source community is adapting to AI by emphasizing developers’ individual accountability. It could set a precedent for other free-software projects, as well as Thai developers who use Debian software or contribute to the project.
