Multiple Studies Agree: Over-reliance on AI May Diminish Critical Thinking Skills

The question of whether humans are "offloading thinking" too much to artificial intelligence—a debate sparked by an opinion piece on the Artfish.ai blog and discussed on Hacker News—is gaining traction with several scientific studies pointing in the same direction.

The discussion originated from observations that people are increasingly relying on AI for decision-making and cognitive tasks, from trivial matters to complex assignments. This raises the philosophical question: if AI largely thinks for us, what value or contribution do we create ourselves?

Recently, research from leading institutions has begun to confirm these effects. Preliminary studies from MIT Media Lab, cited by the Harvard Gazette, indicate that "over-reliance on AI-driven solutions" may lead to "cognitive atrophy" and reduce critical thinking abilities, though this research is still small-scale and not yet peer-reviewed. Joint research by Carnegie Mellon and Microsoft Research similarly concluded that reliance on AI may impede the brain's capacity for critical thought.

Interestingly, research published in the MDPI journal by Gerlich (2025), which studied a sample of 666 individuals, found a significant negative correlation between the frequency of AI use and critical thinking ability, with "cognitive offloading" serving as a key mediator of this relationship. It also found that younger participants tended to rely more on AI and scored lower on critical thinking, reinforcing concerns about the thinking skills of younger generations in the AI era.

Why it matters
In an era where AI is adopted across all sectors, from education to work in Thailand, recognizing its impact on thinking skills is crucial. This awareness allows us to use technology wisely without losing our most essential foundational abilities.
