Reuters reported, citing sources, that over the past month, Chinese authorities held meetings with leading tech companies such as Alibaba, ByteDance, and the startup Z.ai. These meetings, led by China's Ministry of Commerce, aimed to discuss ways to restrict foreign access to the country's most sophisticated AI models, covering both closed-source and more open models. Discussions also included considering the leakage of AI technology a crime under national security laws and potentially introducing new measures to control who can fund AI startups in China. However, sources indicate that all plans are still in the discussion phase. It remains unclear what the scope of the restrictions would be, when they might take effect, or if they will materialize. They might only apply to models developed in the future. This move follows China's government ordering Meta in April to abandon its acquisition of Chinese AI startup Manus.

Why it matters
If implemented, this could impact developers and companies worldwide relying on Chinese AI technology, further escalating the ongoing Tech War.
