ChatGPT adds direct Google Drive file viewing and editing inside chat, no tab switching required
OpenAI rolls out a new feature allowing paid ChatGPT subscribers to open, read, and edit Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides directly from the chat window, with changes saved back to the original Drive files.
OpenAI is deepening ChatGPT's integration with Google Drive, allowing paid subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans to open, read, analyze, and edit Google Drive files—including Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides—directly within the chat window. Users can view them either inline or side-by-side without switching tabs.
Unlike previous implementations, edits made through the chat interface are real, meaning changes are directly saved and updated to the original file in Google Drive rather than creating a static copy that needs to be manually re-uploaded, significantly reducing redundant workflows.
Getting started is straightforward: users connect their Google Drive account via settings, click the "+" button near the prompt box to add files to their "ChatGPT Library," and immediately instruct ChatGPT to read, summarize, analyze, or edit the content. Those who prefer traditional editing still have the option to open the source file directly in Google Docs or Sheets.
This update has been confirmed by reports from 9to5Mac and official OpenAI support documentation detailing Google Drive integration and permission management. The feature is currently rolling out primarily on the web version for paid accounts.
Many professionals already rely on Google Workspace; this feature allows them to seamlessly manage documents, spreadsheets, and presentation slides directly through ChatGPT without switching apps, cutting down on repetitive tasks like copy-pasting files back and forth.
