Wrinkles, a smart audio guide app, tells the hidden stories of places around you, covering 177 countries
Startup Wrinkles launches an AI-powered audio tour guide app that automatically reveals the history and local stories of places around the user, with a database of over 1.3 million points of interest across 177 countries
Wrinkles is a new app, launched on both iOS and Android, that acts as an AI-powered audio tour guide. As users travel to different places, the app uses their location to automatically present stories, hidden history, and local tales of nearby places — both in audio and on the phone screen — without requiring users to search or type in place names themselves.
The app was founded by David Stemler, a former advertising executive, and Ryan Hansan, who previously founded ScratchDC, a food delivery business, and TasteLab, a commercial shared kitchen that helps independent food businesses get started and grow. The two have known each other since middle school. The idea for Wrinkles came about while Stemler was visiting the British Museum in London and tried the museum's official self-guided tour app. Although the app was well designed, he found the experience frustrating, so he wanted to create a smoother way to learn the stories of places.
What stands out is the size of the database. The startup says Wrinkles now has more than 1.3 million points of interest worldwide, covering 177 countries — a figure confirmed by both TechCrunch's report and the app's official App Store listing. In addition, the app allows historians, museums, creators, and brands to add their own content to the platform, so it isn't limited to the basic data gathered by the team.
Wrinkles' concept differs from traditional guide apps in that users don't need to plan ahead — simply walk along, and the app will tell you the stories of the places you're passing. It suits both travelers and locals who may never have known the stories of the neighborhood they live in every day.
An AI audio guide app like this could change how people travel and learn local history — especially for Thai travelers going abroad, since it covers 177 countries. And if its database for Thailand is rich enough, it could also become a tool for telling Thailand's tourism stories to international visitors.
