Typically, when we ask AI to use Chain-of-Thought (CoT), we see the 'scratchpad' of its reasoning. However, high-performance modern models often use Latent CoT—a form of 'internal thinking' without visible steps—creating a 'black box' problem that poses risks to reliability and safety.

A promising new research approach is now applying 'Dynamical Systems'—a mathematical and physical framework used to describe complex systems over time (like weather forecasting)—to decode these internal thoughts. This concept treats hidden 'thoughts' as points moving along a trajectory in a mathematical representation space, allowing researchers to analyze the 'dynamics' of reasoning.

Studies in this field examine 'thought trajectories' using methods such as step-to-step change measurement, direction consistency, and entropy reduction analysis. These techniques can reveal when a model transitions from an 'uncertain' state to a 'crystallized' state, helping researchers distinguish between systematic reasoning and random shortcuts.

Note: While reports mention a paper titled "Interpreting Latent CoT Reasoning as Dynamical Systems," it is not currently found in public arXiv databases. However, several related studies from early-to-mid 2026 utilize similar dynamical systems frameworks, marking this as an emerging and highly significant area of development.

Why it matters
Understanding how AI 'thinks' is critical to building safer, more transparent, and reliable systems, reducing risks associated with unpredictable outputs.
