Aptoide Games Launches: Rival App Store Now Available on Google Play Store for the First Time
For the first time in history, Google is allowing a third-party app store to be distributed via the Play Store, following a court order from the Epic Games case, starting with Aptoide Games, available only to users in the United States.
For the first time, Google has allowed a direct rival app store to appear and be downloadable on its own Google Play Store. The first store to launch is "Aptoide Games," which is currently available only to users in the United States.
This change did not come from Google's own willingness, but from a court order in its legal dispute with Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, which sued Google for monopolizing app distribution on Android. After years of courtroom battles, the court ruled that Google must open its system to competitors. Multiple tech outlets, including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, and Android Authority, have reported and confirmed this development.
The immediate benefit for users is convenience. Previously, using an external app store like Aptoide required sideloading (installing apps from files directly outside the Play Store), a complicated process that posed security risks for average users. But with rival app stores now distributed through the Play Store itself, installation becomes much easier, significantly reducing barriers and risks.
However, in this initial phase, the service is limited to the United States, and there are no details yet on when Google will expand to other countries, or whether other app stores will join the program. Still, this launch marks an important beginning of an era where the Play Store is no longer the only way to find apps on Android.
The Epic vs Google case is reshaping the Android app ecosystem worldwide. Although it's currently limited to the US, the trend toward greater competition could eventually give Thai users more choices and better app prices in the future.
