Facing heavy backlash, Meta removes AI image generation feature from public Instagram accounts just days after launch.
Meta announced the removal of its new AI image generation feature, which allowed users to reference photos from public Instagram accounts, after facing severe criticism over its opt-out privacy policy.
Meta announced on Friday the withdrawal of its new AI image generation feature, Muse Image, from use. This comes just days after its launch as part of a suite of creative AI tools on Instagram, following strong user backlash. The feature allowed users to create new AI images by @-mentioning any public Instagram account to use as inspiration or to reference image styles. However, the main concern arose from the feature's "opt-out" policy, meaning all public accounts of users over 18 years old would automatically be open for the feature to reference their images unless the account owner manually disabled the setting. This policy sparked widespread criticism, particularly from artists and users who viewed it as using others' images or works without explicit consent. Even Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a major talent and artist agency, directly expressed concern to Meta and urged the company to adopt a more reasonable approach, emphasizing that no one should be able to use another person's name, likeness, or work without permission. After facing intense pressure, Meta issued a statement acknowledging, "We've heard your feedback that this feature missed the mark," and announced that the feature would no longer be available. The company stated its original intent was to provide a useful creative tool while also giving people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this manner.
This case is a significant example demonstrating how user feedback can pressure tech giants to reconsider their AI and privacy policies, particularly concerning the use of public data for AI training without explicit consent from data owners.
