Data suggests AI is accelerating Stack Overflow's decline, exacerbating long-standing community issues

Stack Overflow’s own data reveals a sharp drop in new questions, coinciding with the rise of Generative AI which has fundamentally shifted developer behavior worldwide.

Data from the Stack Overflow Data Explorer (SEDE) has sparked intense debate among developers, highlighting a concerning downward trend in monthly new questions. The sharpest decline began in 2022-2023, coinciding with the rapid adoption of Generative AI tools like ChatGPT.

Growth on Stack Overflow had already begun to stall between 2014 and 2018, primarily due to overly strict moderation policies and a perceived hostile community culture. Many new users felt discouraged by harsh responses or threads being closed prematurely, making the process of asking questions an unpleasant experience.

The arrival of AI has provided developers with a more convenient alternative. They can now receive instant code snippets and explanations without the need to wait for human responses or face potential criticism.
